Demand Response

Enerlogics works with electric utilities, and with commercial and industrial customers to enable demand response participation in competitive electric markets.

What is Demand Response?

Demand Response is part of a comprehensive suite of energy services that can help you earn revenue, save energy costs, and comply with carbon emission standards.

Demand Response is a mechanism whereby facilities curtail power use during period of grid emergencies or peak power grid prices. By reducing electricity usage during these grid events, facilities can earn money to help reduce strain on the electric grid.

How Does Demand Response Work?

Commercial, industrial, and institutional customers are ideally suited for the demand response opportunity. Participants agree to reduce electricity consumption in response to abnormally high electric demand or electricity price spikes. In return, the participants receive recurring payments for being ready to respond.

If conditions occur where the electric grid is under abnormal strain or electricity prices spike, your facility is notified of the event via mechanisms such as email, phone, pager, and direct device control. At the start of the event, your facility reduces electricity usage according to a pre-determined curtailment plan.

At the completion of the event, your facility can then return to normal operations.

What Types of Reductions can I Make?

Typical examples of usage reductions made by facilities include:

  • Lighting
  • HVAC equipment
  • Pumps
  • Backup generators
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Battery chargers
  • Thermal storage
  • Industrial freezers

In addition, many industrial processes that are energy intensive can be shifted by a few hours to facilitate event participation.

Frequently Asked Questions about Demand Response

Are there fees to participate?

No. Costs associated with participation are generally covered under the curtailment service provider’s share of the revenue.

What happens during an event?

You are notified via email, phone, pager, etc. You then execute your predetermined curtailment plant.

What if I under or over perform during an event?

If for some reason you cannot perform full curtailment, your standby payments will be reduced. If you over perform during an event, your curtailment service provider will generally pay you for providing enhanced reliability.

How many events have there been in recent years?

For the emergency DR program, there have only been mandatory test events (one test event per year).
